The (ÖBB) invite to a celebration at the Semmering Base Tunnel.
The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) hosted the official celebrations to mark the completion of the excavation work on Friday, January 24, 2025.
After almost 10 years of excavation, the last breakthrough on SBT lot 1.1 was achieved on 29.11.2024. Both tracks are now complete over the entire 27.3 km from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag.
The tunnelling work was carried out under the most difficult geological and hydro-geological conditions. Starting with extensive grouting work, excavation in extremely changing and compressive rock conditions with radial deformations of up to 1 meter. The final concreting and lining work is currently underway to ensure that the tunnel is handed over on time to the subsequent tunnel equipping.
The Semmering Base Tunnel (SBT) is currently one of the most important infrastructure projects in the heart of Europe and part of the new Austrian southern route, a central axis on the trans-European route from the Baltic to the Adriatic. 27.3 km in total, the Semmering Base Tunnel connects Lower Austria with Styria. The ÖBB has commissioned @THYSSEN SCHACHTBAU GMBH as part of a consortium with @Hochtief and @Implenia to build lot 1.1 of the Gloggnitz Tunnel, the 7.3 km long north-eastern section.
