A masterpiece of tunnelling!!

The Semmering Base Tunnel (SBT) is currently one of the most important infrastructure projects in the heart of Europe and Austria, a central axis on the trans-European route from the Baltic to the Adriatic.

On 12.09.2024, @Thyssen Schachtbau GmbH and with partners @Implenia and @Hochtief achieved a historic milestone.

The breakthrough of the Gloggnitz and Göstritz Ost tunnel tubes was completed at tunnel meter 4,262 m. Excavation of Track 1 of the Semmering Base Tunnel is now complete over the entire 27.3 km.

The tunnel construction project is a technical masterpiece! In particular, the extremely varying geology under the most difficult geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions with radial deformations of up to 2.0 m and water ingress of over 100 l/s at 20 bar pressure posed major challenges.
